Digital Literacy Programmes Conducted on Scam Awareness for Senior Citizens

Ooredoo Maldives conducted a Digital Literacy and Scam Awareness Session for senior citizens last week at Israhvehinge Naadhee in Malé and Hulhumale, with the participation of the Maldives Police Service. The session focused on helping senior citizens identify common scams and use digital services more safely and confidently.

“As the use of smartphones, digital payments and online services continues to grow, scams and fraudulent communications are becoming an increasing concern, particularly for individuals who may be less familiar with evolving digital threats,” wrote Ooredoo Maldives in their press release.

Recognising the importance of ensuring that everyone can participate safely in an increasingly digital society, Ooredoo Maldives organised the sessions to provide senior citizens with practical knowledge to better protect themselves online.

A key focus of the programme was scam awareness. Participants were introduced to common types of scams, including fraudulent calls and messages, phishing links, impersonation attempts and requests for sensitive financial or personal information. The session also highlighted the importance of protecting passwords, OTPs, banking information and other personal details, as well as steps to take when encountering suspicious communications.

Representatives from the Maldives Police Service joined the programme to share their expertise on scam awareness and online safety, providing participants with practical guidance on recognising suspicious activity and protecting themselves against fraud.

In addition to scam awareness, the interactive programme provided guidance on safely using smartphones and everyday digital services. Participants were able to ask questions and receive hands-on support, helping them become more confident and independent when navigating the digital world.

Ooredoo Maldives has maintained a longstanding relationship with Israhvehinge Naadhee, supporting initiatives for senior citizens since 2018. This latest programme builds on that relationship while contributing to Ooredoo’s broader commitment to an inclusive and safer Digital Maldives.
