Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has recorded 990 stroke cases since January 2025, averaging approximately one patient every 16 hours, according to figures released by the hospital.
The hospital recorded 572 cases in 2025 and a further 418 in 2026. One in seven stroke patients recorded this year was under the age of 45.
Men accounted for around seven in 10 patients, with approximately 2.4 male patients for every female patient, the figures show.

IGMH also reported that 43 patients received clot-busting treatment in 2026, exceeding the total treated with the intervention throughout 2025. The treatment, known as thrombolysis, can restore blood flow in eligible patients experiencing an ischaemic stroke caused by a blood clot blocking a blood vessel in the brain. Its use depends on clinical assessment and how quickly the patient reaches medical care.
The figures come as the Maldives develops specialised services for stroke and other neurological conditions.
In February 2026, the National Centre for Neuroscience and Stroke was inaugurated at Dharumavantha Hospital. The centre provides specialised services for neurological conditions, including stroke assessment and follow-up care, and is equipped with advanced medical technologies to support treatment.
Despite these developments in treatment, recognising stroke symptoms and seeking emergency care quickly remain critical. A stroke occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or a blood vessel ruptures, potentially causing lasting disability or death.
The public is advised to use the BE FAST warning signs to recognise a possible stroke: Balance problems, sudden changes in Eyesight, facial drooping, weakness in the Arms, and difficulty with Speech. Time means seeking emergency help immediately.
Anyone who suspects a stroke should call 102 immediately, said IGMH.
