Hulhumale’ Car Crash Driver Detained Again Following High Court Ruling

The driver involved in a severe car accident in Hulhumale’ in last July has been re-arrested by the police, just hours after his release by the High Court yesterday.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of July 31 outside the Vinares apartments in Hulhumale’ Phase II. The crash involved a speeding car that lost control and struck a 27-year-old motorcyclist on the roadside.

Ibrahim Ikram, 33, of M. Land of Garden, K. Male’, is suspected of driving the vehicle. He, along with two others in the car, fled the scene but was later apprehended that evening. Ikram was initially remanded in custody pending trial by the Criminal Court.

Ikram challenged the remand decision in the High Court, claiming that he was denied legal representation during the hearing. The High Court ruled in his favour and overturned his detention last afternoon.

However, Minister Ali Ihusan announced via X that Ikram had been re-arrested under a court order. This development followed criticism of the police regarding Ikram’s release.

The High Court judges had accused the police of misleading them by falsely claiming that the Criminal Court judge had offered Ikram the option of legal representation. A review of the remand hearing recording revealed that Ikram was never asked if he wanted a lawyer.

The two other individuals in the vehicle were also arrested. Ikram-ul Rahman, 25, of H. Nooranmaage, K. Male’, was remanded in custody pending trial on August 1. Jinah Ismail of Aazadhuge, GA. Kanduhulhudhoo, was remanded for 15 days, with no announcement yet on any extension of her remand.

CCTV footage of the accident shows the car losing control while making a sharp turn, hitting a road divider, and then colliding with the stationary motorcyclist, who had stopped to retrieve his phone. The impact caused him to be thrown into the air, with his head hitting the car before he landed on the ground. The car also struck a tree before coming to a halt on the pavement.

The motorcyclist was first treated at Hulhumale’ Hospital before being transferred to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male’ City. His family has reported multiple fractures as a result of the crash.
