A fire broke out at a harbour petrol shed on Shaviyani Funadhoo this morning, destroying one home and damaging several neighbouring buildings before emergency teams brought the blaze under control.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the fire rapidly spread from the harbourfront fuel station to nearby properties, ultimately affecting four residential houses and five workshops and garages. One residence was severely burnt and sustained extensive structural damage, while three neighbouring homes suffered varying levels of damage from the intense heat and flames.

Local police, airport firefighters, and community volunteers swiftly mobilised to battle the fire, joined by a Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) fire team deployed from Kulhudhuffushi. While crews succeeded in bringing the blaze under control, residents from the immediate area were evacuated as secondary explosions continued to be heard from the site. Families living in neighbouring houses have been moved to temporary accommodation as a safety precaution.
