EPA Fines Male’ City Council for Illegal Waste Dumping

The Male’ City Council has been fined MVR45,500 by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) for unlawfully depositing waste collected from the streets onto a land plot owned by the council.
According to the EPA, the council was found to be engaging in illegal dumping activities on the eastern side of the Edhuruhiyaa Residential Building. The waste was being deposited at the site during the closed hours of the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO), and it would then be collected and removed in the morning.
Numerous residents in the area filed complaints against the council, prompting the EPA to conduct multiple visits to the site to investigate the council’s actions. Consequently, on June 8, the EPA imposed a fine of MVR45,500 on the council, with a payment deadline of one month, in accordance with the Waste Management Act.
Furthermore, the council’s waste management practices were deemed illegal as they had failed to obtain the necessary permits for waste collection and management. Consequently, the EPA has directed the council to acquire the required permits prior to engaging in waste collection and management activities.
