The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to take precautionary measures during the upcoming Eid holiday period, as many people are expected to travel, amid a continued rise in dengue fever and respiratory illnesses, including common cold and influenza, across the Maldives.

In an advisory issued as seasonal illnesses increase, the HPA warned that respiratory infections among children typically rise during this period and called on the public to remain vigilant to reduce the spread of disease.

The agency stated that individuals experiencing fever or symptoms of respiratory illness should cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

The HPA also advised people to wear clothing that covers the body when outdoors and to use masks or cloth face coverings, particularly while spending time outside during travel and gatherings.

The use of mosquito repellent lotions or sprays during the morning and evening hours was strongly recommended as part of dengue prevention efforts.

People who are feeling unwell were advised to avoid crowded places, including tuition classes and visits to other patients, in an effort to reduce transmission.

The advisory further urged the public to wash hands thoroughly with soap or use hand sanitiser regularly, while household items used by sick individuals, including plates and spoons, should be kept separate.

Parents were also advised not to send children to school if they are unwell, noting that illnesses spread easily among children.

As part of mosquito control measures, the HPA called on households to eliminate mosquito breeding sites in and around homes.

The agency also stated that only mosquito repellents containing DEET, Icaridin or IR3535 should be used, and only under the advice or guidance of a doctor.

The HPA urged the public to remain alert and take the recommended precautions to protect themselves and their families during the holiday travel period.
