Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Dharumavantha Hospital held an opening ceremony to launch the Joint Commission International (JCI) Patient Safety Pathway initiative re-assessment, aiming to elevate clinical standards and patient safety across both tertiary facilities.

The collaborative programme convenes healthcare leadership, JCI experts, external assessors, and hospital personnel to evaluate existing benchmarks, exchange operational insights, and pinpoint areas to strengthen care delivery protocols.

Hospital officials highlighted the re-assessment as a critical benchmark in standardising clinical excellence across both institutions, emphasising institutional accountability, interdepartmental teamwork, and continuous learning to ensure high-quality, compassionate care.

Leadership from both facilities also expressed appreciation to the Quality Commissioner of the Maldives, the visiting JCI evaluation team, and healthcare staff for their ongoing dedication to advancing institutional healthcare quality.

The joint initiative comes as the government prepares a major structural overhaul of state-run hospitals. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu recently announced the dissolution and reconstitution of the Malé City Group of Hospitals governing board and the formation of the Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group, part of a wider reform to unite all tertiary-level facilities nationwide under a single governing body. Starting this November, the transition aims to eliminate operational redundancies, streamline shared resources, and optimise specialist doctor deployments over the next three to four months.
