The National Centre for the Holy Quran has opened a new branch in Lhaviyani Hinnavaru as part of a government project to expand Quran classes across the atolls.
Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments Abdul Ghafoor Ahmed opened the facility during a special ceremony attended by senior officials from the centre and members of the Hinnavaru Island Council.
During the visit, the delegation formally launched Quran classes, met with enrolled students and their parents, and held administrative discussions with the Hinnavaru Council and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) to ensure the sustainable management of local educational programmes.
The opening is part of a broader nationwide rollout. Registration has been completed for 10 additional branches preparing for official opening in:
- Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaranfaru
- Haa Dhaalu Vaikaradhoo
- Raa Maduvvari
- Raa Rasmaadhoo
- Raa Hulhudhuffaaru
- Kaafu Maafushi
- Faafu Magoodhoo
- Laamu Maavah
- Gaafu Alifu Dhaandhoo
- Seenu Hithadhoo
Proposals have also been submitted to register branches across 12 more islands: Haa Alif Ihavandhoo, Shaviyani Maroshi, Raa Maakurathu, Baa Thulhaadhoo, Alif Alif Feridhoo, Alif Alif Maalhos, Dhaalu Meedhoo, Thaa Vilufushi, Laamu Kalaidhoo, Laamu Gan, Gaafu Dhaalu. Gadhdhoo, and Gaafu Alifu Kendhuhulhudhoo.
The decentralisation drive aligns with broader administration policies under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, prioritising Islamic education and memorisation. Key measures introduced under this agenda include fully state-funding the National Quran Competition with increased prize allocations, doubling financial allowances for Hafizes, introducing a dedicated graduation ceremony for those who complete Quran memorisation, and launching specialised Waqf projects to secure sustainable funding for Quranic development.
