First Sitting of 2nd Session of 2025

The People’s Majlis has gone on another break after holding only one session since resuming earlier this week, drawing fresh criticism over its irregular schedule and limited sittings.

The first term of this year officially ended on 15 May. According to the Majlis website, a total of 32 sessions were held during that period, along with three special sittings. However, since reconvening on Monday, the Parliament has held just a single session before breaking again.

Parliamentary regulations stipulate that the Majlis should hold at least three sessions per week. Yet, since the current 20th Parliament took office, this rule has rarely been followed. In recent months, most sessions have been notably brief and sparsely attended.

During Monday’s session, members discussed the appointment of two judges to the Supreme Court. The Majlis also debated a bill proposed by Dhandhoo MP Mohamed Fazeel to amend the Civil Aviation Authority Act, which was introduced on behalf of the government.

In a departure from usual practice, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla did not announce the next session at the end of Monday’s sitting. According to the Majlis, Parliament will now resume after the upcoming Eid holidays, which begin tomorrow and continue until next Monday.

The limited number of sittings and repeated breaks have led to growing public criticism over Parliament’s performance and its ability to fulfil its legislative responsibilities.
