Sentencing Details Revealed in Newborn Murder Case
Prison terms issued in newborn murder case
Three individuals, including a woman and her boyfriend, have been sentenced to prison terms for their involvement in the murder of a newborn infant, with the sentences ranging from two years and six months to five years.
The Criminal Court convicted Aishath Shaira of Greenlight, A.Dh. Maamigili; Mohamed Imthiyaz of Sosunvilla, Th. Madifushi; and Moosa Ahsam of Shadow, H.A. Filladhoo, in connection with the killing of an infant born in 2019.
The court has released details of the sentences but has not yet issued a full report outlining the findings of the trial. The convictions were based on confessions made by the three individuals, according to information released by the court.
Moosa Ahsam was charged with intentional homicide, while Shaira and Imthiyaz were charged with participating in intentional homicide. Shaira also faced an additional charge of knowingly failing to report the sexual assault of a child.
Ahsam was convicted of intentional homicide and sentenced to five years in prison. After deducting the time already spent in remand, his remaining sentence stands at three years and seven months.
Shaira, the grandmother of the deceased infant, was convicted on both charges. She received a six-month prison sentence for failing to report the sexual assault of a child and an additional two years and six months for participating in the murder.
According to case details, Ahsam sexually assaulted Shaira’s daughter, who was under 18 at the time, and Shaira did not report the offence. The child later gave birth to Ahsam’s baby.
Imthiyaz, Shaira’s boyfriend, was convicted of participating in the murder and sentenced to two years and six months in prison.
The case involved the death of a newborn child in 2019, and the Criminal Court has yet to release a complete judgment explaining the circumstances and evidence considered during the trial.
