The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has begun issuing notices to tenants occupying government-issued flats in Hulhumalé who have fallen behind on rent payments.
The corporation confirmed that it is currently distributing reminders to tenants with overdue rent, although it has not taken steps to evict any of them.
According to the HDC, tenants with unpaid rent are sent notices every three months to encourage payment. The corporation has stated that 5,099 flats are currently not making regular rent contributions.
Rent deferment measures were previously introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic under the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. More recently, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu implemented a rent discount for government flats in Hulhumalé.
Despite these interventions, rent recovery remains an ongoing concern for the HDC, which is continuing efforts to address the growing number of tenants in arrears.
