The head of the NCTC, which serves as the state’s lead agency in preventing terrorism and countering violent extremism, is appointed directly by the President.

The appointment comes after Moosa’s unsuccessful bid for Malé City Mayor in the recent local council elections, where he contested on the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) ticket.

Moosa takes charge of the national counterterrorism body following an extensive career in the armed forces spanning several decades.

During his service in the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), he held numerous top command positions, including Chief of Defence Force, and later served as Minister of Defence and National Security.
