January’s PS Plus free titles are heavy hitters

The free games for January for PS+ subscribers are:

  • Persona 5 Strikers (PS4)
  • Dirt 5 (PS4, PS5)
  • Deep Rock Galactic (PS4, PS5)

Persona 5 is considered to be among the best RPG games, with Persona 5 Strikers being a semi-sequel to the original 2016 title. Strikers continues the story of the Phantom Thieves in the form of a Dynasty Warriors game where you face hordes of enemies at once on-screen. P5 Strikers is almost as well-received as the original P5 RPG game, and now PS Plus users can enjoy it for free.

Dirt 5 can be redeemed on both PS4 and PS5, but PS5 players can enjoy the ultra-smooth 120fps performance mode in this award-winning sim racer. This title has all the bells and whistles of modern racing games in addition to a rare 4 way split-screen option for local multiplayer.

Deep Rock Galactic is an indie gem that has been gathering positive feedback nonstop since it was first released in 2020. DRG can be played 1-4 players and is a mix of FPS shooter, exploration, mining, and gathering mechanics. This seemingly simple game will have you running missions nonstop as you get trapped in a loop of amazing coop gameplay. Deep Rock Galactic is currently one of the highest-rated games on Steam and has won multiple Game of the Year awards – and PS Plus users can play it for free starting right now.

Sony announces more details about PS VR2

We now know everything about the PlayStation VR2 except what the headset looks like and the release date. The technical specifications of the VR headset were revealed this week at Sony’s CES show this week. The original PS VR headset helped bring cheap and affordable VR to consumers and Sony is betting big on the much healthier VR market of 2022 by making the PS VR2 a truly high-end device.

The PS VR2 uses a 4K OLED panel for its display – an enormous upgrade over its predecessor. Some of the other highlights include a larger field of view, higher refresh rate, vibration on the HMD itself to help mitigate motion sickness and most importantly, foveated rendering. This new feature will help the PS VR2 push visuals and framerates that would otherwise not be possible with the PS5 hardware.

While a release date is still not known, many industry insiders speculate a late 2022 release for the new VR headset.

More VR goodness

Fans of RE4 VR will be happy to know that they can soon play other Resident Evil titles in VR. Modders have been working on mods that will make all the recent Resident Evil titles playable in VR for anyone with a strong enough PC to run it. This applies not just to the Resident Evil franchise but to all games made by Capcom using the RE Engine including Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry.

Improvements to the mods are being made all the time for better VR compatibility and motion controls.

Battlefield 2042 still facing problems

Battlefield 2042 is the latest in EA’s once critically acclaimed sim-shooter Battlefield franchise. While the Battlefield games never reached the sales highs of its rivals Call of Duty or Halo, it more than made up for it by being the premier team-based shooter that puts a heavy emphasis on teamwork and large-scale battles. This may unfortunately be a description we can no longer use for the Battlefield games as all of its recent releases have been met with little fanfare due to many game-breaking bugs and lack of content at launch.

The Battlefield games have gone from being a token of quality to something gamers tend to avoid now. The most recent release of Battlefield 2042 is a prime example of this as this game has been so riddled with bugs, glitches, and missing content that over the past few weeks it has lost a majority of its player base. Players on PC and consoles report difficulty finding matches even on peak times with steam user charts showing more players playing the almost 4-year-old Battlefield V than the current title.

Twisted Metal is making a comeback as a TV show

Twisted Metal was once a staple of the PlayStation brand. The gripping vehicular combat and over the top violence made these games stand out in colorful ways. The most recent game in the series came out all the way back in 2012 on the PS3, but new internet rumors suggest that Ludic Games is developing a new Twisted Metal game.

This rumor is heavily supported by the fact that Sony just announced a new TV show based on the Twisted Metal franchise. It’s easy to assume that Sony will likely also make a new game to market together with the TV show when it eventually comes out.
